App Annie CEO on Lessons from China & Other Emerging Markets (Podcast)

In a new podcast, Bertrand Schmitt shares his perspective on the mobile market in China and the particular challenges for mobile in India

App Annie CEO and Co-Founder Bertrand Schmitt recently joined Aurelie Guerrieri, founder of Akila One and author of The Mobile Native’s Guide to Marketing, in a podcast conversation hosted by Mobile Growth Fellowship that focused on what mobile marketers can learn from how mobile has unfolded in China and India.

The discussion dives deep into a range of topics, from how QR codes are finally getting some traction in Western markets because of their success with WeChat in China to how Schmitt believes that in China the market has transitioned from mobile-first to mobile-only.

Schmitt also also offers an interesting perspective regarding the speed at which innovation happens in China. “What takes you months to decide, to validate, to strategize in other markets, may take only weeks to happen in China because people are used to innovating very fast,” he says. And that can lead to frustration for an American company’s Chinese team because the Chinese team will feel unempowered compared with the competition.

“The rate of innovation and the level of autonomy you want to give to the local teams might be very different from what you are used to, so if you’re not ready to make an exception [!with!] China, that will be difficult,” Schmitt says.

The conversation also delved into India, one of 2018’s most promising emerging markets. There, Schmitt says, there aren’t as many local internet players as there are in China, so it’s easier for foreign entities to gain traction. In addition, he noted that we’re currently seeing massive downloads in India that will over time translate to large-scale revenue opportunities, particularly for those players who are able to establish a firm position early.
