Meta’s Threads Crosses 150M Downloads Worldwide after Seeing Nearly 100M Active Users in First Three Days

The blockbuster app reached its latest download milestone 5.5 times more quickly than the second-fastest app to do so.

Meta’s new microblogging social app Threads, released globally a week ago today, has set the bar so high for new mobile software product launches that it’s not likely to be surpassed for many quarters, or even years. Within seven days, the app has amassed a staggering download count totaling more than 150 million worldwide. It did so 5.5 times faster than the second-fastest to that point, Niantic’s Pokémon GO, which has held the largest app launch title since it debuted in July 2016. Threads Draws an Unprecedented User Base Out of the Gate

Initial figures from Intelligence, combining our panel-based real usage signals with AI and machine learning, reveal that Threads attracted an audience of approximately 93 million active users globally during its first partial week of availability. Subsequent to this, Meta announced that Threads had reached 100 million signups by the morning of Monday, July 10.

While the world’s top social apps have weekly active user counts starting in the half-billion range years into their lifecycles, Threads attracting nearly 100 million WAU during this early period is unprecedented. That means it already had about a fifth of the weekly active user base of Twitter worldwide and was 86 times the WAU of the largest Twitter rival in the United States by that measure, Truth Social, with 1 million WAU as of last week.

India Leads Demand for Threads

Until now, the install base of Meta’s breakout app has been limited to a single global figure. Now we know where Threads has established the largest footprint, and these top markets are led by India, which has accounted for about 32% of its downloads. Indian consumers have flocked to new social platforms in the past, making ByteDance’s TikTok a cultural phenomenon there before it ceased operating in the country. At the same time, India is Twitter’s second-largest market in terms of both lifetime downloads and monthly active users.

India is followed by Brazil, where approximately 22% of Threads’ installs have originated from, and the U.S., which represents close to 16% of the total. Rounding out its top five markets are Mexico (8% of downloads) and Japan (5%).
