BlaBlaCar Surpassed 100 Million Downloads Worldwide — Connecting Travellers to Environmentally-Conscious Carpools and Bus Transportation

Lexi Sydow

A major milestone for the ride-sharing company and an important indicator of shifting consumer priorities.

BlaBlaCar has reached the global milestone of 100 million downloads of its ride-sharing app. The app is unique in the ride-sharing ecosystem in that it specializes in connecting travelers going in similar directions, to minimize impact on the environment, maximize travel plans between consumers and ultimately save costs. Many ride-sharing apps have shared rides as an option, but not the primary value proposition alone of the app itself. In Blablacar, you can also customize your carpool preferences, selecting if you prefer not to share a ride with food, music, smoking or animals — maximizing comfort while leaving a smaller carbon footprint. In the context of the UN Climate Report, sustainability and environmental initiatives are top of mind for consumers in many markets. Combined with cheaper rides, BlaBlaCar has tapped into a market looking for convenient, cost-effective and environmentally conscious transportation.

BlaBlaCar is headquartered in France, and France is the #2 market by downloads after Russia at #1. Emerging markets in LATAM have maked in the top 10, with Brazil at #3 and Mexico at #10. LATAM presents a stragetic high-growth market on mobile that many overseas publishers are prioritizing in their overseas expansion plans. We will continue to monitor shifts in its user base as market expansion continues and travelers continue to prioritize budget-friendly options while considering transportation methods that leave a smaller footprint on the planet.
