The life of a successful mobile app has many milestones, but few are as significant as when they reach $1 billion in all-time consumer spending. (TikTok’s recent $10 billion milestone is on another level altogether.) This propels an app into an elite class and all but cements its place in the history of the industry. 2023 saw 26 apps and games from around the world celebrate their achievement of this lofty goal, including the likes of Audible, ESPN and League of Legends: Wild Rift.

That figure is up slightly from 2022, when 23 apps made this measure, and just behind the current record of 28 set in 2021. There was a significant jump in 2020 compared to previous years, as consumer spending during the height of the pandemic pushed 21 apps and games past the line compared to just nine the year before.

Meet the $1 Billion Club of 2023

Below are the 19 mobile games and seven applications that hit $1 billion grossed this year, in alphabetical order. Use the tabs to compare the list against the apps that reached this mark in 2022.

In the case of Spotify, only a portion of its revenue is processed through the app stores and estimated by data.ai Intelligence. That portion alone has now topped $1 billion.

Most of the seven apps (four, to be exact) for 2023 were in the Sports and Entertainment categories, with two each. Of the four applications on the list in 2022, three were classified in Entertainment. Roleplaying Games (RPGs) constituted the single largest group of mobile games reaching $1 billion this year at five of 19 titles, down from six of 19 last year. Strategy was the second largest category this year with four titles, the same as in 2022.
